"Composing for the Solo Voice: Collaborating with Singers"
A Masterclass with CMASH Artistic Director Ann Moss

CSU LA, 11:00am
We will explore the technical workings of the solo voice, as well as the nature of the singer as a collaborative musician. Topics of discussion will include the German Fach system of voice classification, basic principles of vocal production, how to prepare a vocal score, range vs tessitura, understanding register shifts, extended techniques, vocal melodic textures and instrument pairings. We will also explore more esoteric themes, such as how to choose text, ways to start a productive dialogue with your vocal collaborator, and the thrills and spills of working with a “diva” personality.
